Lisa McGuey President
Lisa brings to the Genesis Centre team a passion for life-long learning and community building. Growing up in small-town Ontario, Lisa became actively involved in her community through sport, recreation and leisure—developing and initiating programming which ultimately led her to receive a youth Millennium Excellence award for community innovation. Lisa continued her involvement community while pursuing her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education through Trent and Queen's University where she was active in aquatic and outdoor education leadership.

Syed Hussain Secretary
With a Bachelor’s from Concordia University, Montreal and a strong business acumen, Syed Hussain has a passion to inspire change. He is employed with Air Canada as a Key Account Manager in Global Sales and is a proud founding member of GenYYC which is a new leadership development program designed through a collaborative partnership between the Calgary Chamber and the Calgary Foundation to support and encourage emerging young leaders in the city to build great leaders, great organizations and a great community. He is also the owner of Catalytic Arts which produces the most thrilling shows showcasing local emerging artists in the best of entertainment today while supporting different charities. Syed has travelled the world and has an inspired vision of the future. His experiences in life have been varied and dynamic, built on the principles of commitment, integrity and results.

Bilal Akhtar Treasurer
M Bilal Akhtar was born in 1986. When he first arrived in Canada with his family in 2000, he learnt how important it was for him to learn French language in order for him to succeed in his school and future career while living in Quebec. While taking the challenge of a new language along with five other languages: Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Arabic and English; he also successfully completed his diploma of college studies in Pure Applied Sciences at Vanier College in Montreal. He is currently in his fourth year working towards getting a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Accounting at the University of Calgary. After completing the degree his short-term goal is to pursue a Chartered Accountant (CA) designation.

Greg Steiner Saddle Ridge Rep
Greg is credited with the original vision for a recreational leisure centre on behalf of the northeast residents above McKnight Blvd. For 15 years he has worked tirelessly from the initial planning stages to the final opening of the new Genesis Centre of Community Wellness. Having served on the design, construction, and fund development committees, he continues to work towards accomplishing the overall vision and mandate of the Northeast Centre of Community Society (NECCS), of which he is a founding member. Having lived in Saddle Ridge for over 32 years, Greg has served in various executive capacities for Saddle Ridge Community Association, a founding partner of NECCS.

Nadeem Khan Director-at-Large
Nadeem is a dedicated professional in the admin and HR field. He carries a Bachelors in Business Administration and is currently working with the City of Calgary as the Leader of Administration & Finance. With that he is responsible for an $80 million operational budget and leading a staff of over 500 in a unionized 24/7 multifaceted field environment. Nadeem has been a passionate volunteer for over 20 years. He enjoys camping and hiking and the wonderful fresh mountain air.

Jason Klink Past President
Jason comes from a background in science (MSc) but has worked the last 15 years international and community development. He has been at United Way since 2011 funding and working alongside community groups and non profit agencies. His individual passion is very similar to his work and his involvement at Genesis is through work, volunteering, and using it with his own family as a Taradale resident. He also spends spare time as a very unsuccessful amateur fisherman.

Vikram Kulkarni Director-at-Large
Originally from Mumbai India, Vik Kulkarni moved to Canada in 2003 after completing a contractual obligation at the School of Combat Engineers (SOCE) with the Singapore Armed forces (SAF). His educational credentials include a diploma in Criminology, degree in English and a Masters degree in Human Security and Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC.

Anil Verma Director-at-Large
Anil brings wide-ranging expertise to his role as Director at Large at Genesis Centre. Anil has a Master’s Degree in Economics and has been working in the Banking and Finance sector for over 30 years. He is an active volunteer with many non-for-profit organizations and enjoys serving the community.

Akhtar Khawaja Taradale Representative
Akhtar Khawaja is a dedicated professional in the field of engineering and technology. Originally from the city of Hyderabad, Pakistan, Akhtar moved to Canada in 2006 with a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. He pursued his higher technical education in Canada and obtained his Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer engineering from University of Windsor, Ontario, in 2008. After completing his Master’s, he moved to Calgary seeking challenge, adventure and change, and, of course, better living prospects in the vibrant city of Calgary and began his professional career by working with an international EPC and consultant organization where he attained significant organizational and professional experience pertaining to customer service and public dealing along with technical design and construction engineering experience. Akhtar is also a passionate teacher and teaches computer courses at a private vocational training institute in Calgary.

Ashley Holloway Director-at-Large
Ashley brings forth to the Genesis Centre a great passion for building strong, healthy communities. Her educational credentials include a diploma in nursing and she is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Public Health, majoring in Health Systems Management. She has also been a Reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces with the Calgary Highlanders for the past twelve years, and holds the rank of Master Corporal. Ashley has been involved with many different aspects of the Canadian health care system, having worked in different acute care hospitals in Calgary as well as in education at Bow Valley College. She has also been heavily involved with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses in various capacities for the past decade, both chairing and sitting on different committees in an effort to influence the health of Albertans. She has been invited to speak at various nursing conferences in Alberta and has published in the CLPNA’s Care Magazine. Ashley currently works in the School of Health & Wellness at Bow Valley College as the Clinical Placement Officer, engaging with community stakeholders to build partnerships that enhance the education of BVC’s students in their health programmes.

Gurvir Johal Director-at-Large
Gurvir graduated from Mount Royal University with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a major in Accounting in 2011. He received his CMA/CPA designation in 2014. Born and raisied in the Northeast Calgary, he is a strong believer in giving back to the community.

Sherry King Executive Director
Sherry joined the Genesis Centre team in 2011 prior to the completion of the Genesis Centre. Prior to that she was a key volunteer with the NECCS Board of Directors “Completing the Dream Together” Capital Campaign with one of her fondest memories being the ground-breaking ceremony of the Genesis Centre of Community Wellness shared with her middle son. Sherry has lived, worked and been heavily involved in North East Calgary her entire life. She strongly believes in giving back and the need for strong communities. She is a busy mother of 3 boys who enjoys getting out and being active especially with Geocaching, camping and hiking.

Adnan Qureshi Director-at-Large
Adnan Qureshi is a 3rd-year Finance undergraduate student at the Mount Royal University. Currently taking part in Finance and entrepreneur innovation club, helping students network and organizing events with various employers at the university. Affiliated and taking part with house of dreams and Canadian feed the kids to provide basic needs. He is also taking parts in different projects through different organizations to make a difference in people’s lives by making donation and volunteer work.

Nadeem Khan Finance & HR Manager
Nadeem is a dedicated professional in the fields of Finance, admin and HR. He carries a degree in business administration. Before joining the Genesis administration team, he was on the Board and was member of Audit & Finance Committee for over six years. After moving to Canada in 2008, he worked for almost nine years with the City of Calgary in the fields of general administration, HR and Finance. Nadeem has been a passionate volunteer for over 30 years. He enjoys camping and hiking and the wonderful fresh mountain air.

Jonah Ardiel Business Development Manager
Jonah first joined the Genesis Centre in 2017, as the organization’s Canada 150 Coordinator, wherein he developed impactful programming under the federal Canada 150 program. Following this, he joined the organization’s overarching Board of Directors and sat as a member of the Sustainability & Stakeholders’ Relations Committee. Supplementing this, Jonah brings expertise in the field of marketing and communications, organizational strategy, program coordination, and a broad knowledge of not-for-profits and charities across Calgary. Recreationally, Jonah is a short fiction writer, avid runner, having completed numerous marathons, and enjoys spending time in the nearby Rocky Mountains as much as possible.

Doug Taggart Building Operations Manager
Doug joined the Genesis team in April 2015. He provides leadership and operational experience to the Building Operations and Custodial department. He has 30 years of operational experience while working for the City of Calgary Recreation department. He operated Arenas and Athletic parks such as the Max Bell Centre and Shouldice Arena / Athletic park.

Krista Frayn Active Living & Events Coordinator
Krista joined the Genesis Centre team in 2012 as the Special Events Coordinator. Krista has been in the events industry for over 10 years and is an International Event and Wedding Planning Professional (IEWPP).

Stephen Osondu Guest Services Manager
Stephen joined the Genesis team in 2013 as a Duty Manager. In his current role as Guest Services Manager, he leads, provides strategic direction for and is responsible for Guest Services operations. Prior to Genesis Centre, Stephen worked in the hospitality industry for 4 years. Among his qualifications include a Master’s degree in Business Management from Dublin City University. In 2013, Stephen decided it was time for a change of scenery and relocated with his family from Ireland to Canada, where they have since made their home. When Stephen is not at work, he is spending quality time with his 3 children.

Kohe Tom Active Living & Events Manager
Kohe joined the Genesis Centre in July 2014. She Graduated from Mount Royal University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Applied Business and Entrepreneurship – Sport and Recreation degree. Previously Kohe worked in Portland Oregon for the city programming their city parks with movies, concerts and kids day camps.

Kanwar Pannu Guest Services Supervisor
Kanwar joined the Genesis Centre team in 2014 as a Facility Attendant. He has a Masters Degree in Physical Education and began working as a Physical Education Teacher/Lecturer in 4 different institutions in India before moving to Canada in 2013.

Dwayne Collins Guest Services Supervisor
Dwayne joined the Genesis Centre in January 2019. He holds degrees in Business Administration, Management Studies, and Health & Physical Education. Previously, he was an Event Coordinator at Mount Royal University. Before moving to Canada, in his native country of Jamaica, he was a firefighter and member of the Caribbean search and rescue team. Outside of work, he is passionate about family and bodybuilding.

Essmaa Kachour Events Coordinator
Essmaa has worn many hats with the Genesis Centre. Beginning in 2016 as a Facility Attendant, she’s also held the position of Bookings & Financial Coordinator, before moving into her current role as the organization’s Events Coordinator. In this position, Essmaa facilitates the booking process for clients including concerts, birthday parties, community programming, and much more. Beyond her passion for the Genesis Centre, Essmaa also holds a Baking & Pastry Arts diploma from SAIT Polytechnic.

Dana MacCallum Active Living Coordinator
Dana joined the Genesis Centre in July 2014. As the Active Living Coordinator, she is responsible for managing all reoccurring bookings along with tournaments and summer camps. She also recently added marketing to her portfolio, as it pertains to active living and events. Dana holds a Bachelor of Applied Business and Entrepreneurship – Sport and Recreation degree from Mount Royal University and has previously worked for professional sport teams and the Calgary International Film Festival.

Mandana Chowdhury Events Coordinator
Mandana Chowdhury Events Coordinator Mandana joined the Genesis Centre team in September 2014. She is responsible for coordinating special events at the Centre – whether it be a birthday party, concert, or a wedding, she is here to make sure your event is successful!

Shakil Shivji Guest Services Associate
Shakil (Shak) has been with the Genesis Centre since 2017. He initially signed on as a Facility Attendant, but shortly after became the Guest Services Associate. In this role, he is the first point of contact for passholders and new members to the facility. Shak holds a BA (Psychology) from the University of Calgary. Outside of work, he is a successful Calgary-based DJ, soccer aficionado, and Pokémon Master.

Family Pass Fee Subsidy
Families who qualify for the City of Calgary Fair Entry program are also eligible to receive a subsidized Genesis Centre Family Pass. This is 50% off the regular annual rate. Our Fee Subsidy program is designed to help families create lasting memories by getting more active more often. Individual passes do no apply. Those wishing to make use of this program must first acquire a “Fair Entry” approval letter from the City. This can be found on the City of Calgary website here.
